It’s the time of year when countless people around the world are making resolutions.

I’m going to lose weight.

I’m going to save more money.

I’m going to exercise every day.

I’m going to watch less TV.

Making a resolution is a good idea. It forces you to reflect on your life and set goals. (I avoid making them on New Year’s . . . it’s just too much pressure around the holidays when I’m just trying to keep up with my normal routine. Personally, I like making them on my birthday… the true start of my new year.) And as noble as resolutions are we’ve all heard the statistics that something like 99.99999% of people fail to fulfill their resolutions. Why? They’re vague or not realistic. Lose weight—how much exactly and is there a “due date”? Exercise every day? I can’t do anything every day, even things I enjoy.

We’re told to break our goals down into smaller, more manageable and attainable steps—focus on the details. So, instead of my vague “improving my photography” resolution I took the experts’ advice literally and photographed the details . . . a centerpiece of small red ornaments arranged on my coffee table. I can’t wait to see what other details I’ll notice in the coming year.
