For this week's prompt: this upcoming Friday, April 25th, the world celebrates DNA day! To honor this momentous occasion, begin a free write describing something about yourself (perhaps your deep love for iced chai; your penchant for forest green home decor; your fish obsession) that feels so intrinsic to your character that it must be written in your DNA.

"Words have a complex beauty: conjurers of magic, they roll off the tongue, they elicit our emotions, serve as bridges between both personal and collective history. Pysanky is one of those words to me, even though it is not of my native tongue. It is Ukrainian, and derives from the verb pysaty, which means “to write.” In a lyrical linguistic maneuver, pysanky is intertwined with and describes the art of Ukrainian egg design done at Easter time, with the “writing” completed on the eggs wordlessly, with wax and dye."

New creative nonfiction piece up in The Keeping Room!

Here's a snippet from Shanda McManus's "Bone and The Witch":

"Bone, whose real name was Sonia, slurred and moaned. Her laugh was uhhuh and a prolonged hiccup. Her thin arms jerked back and forth when she got excited, and her hands twisted into uneven fists. Sometimes spit would pool behind her lips and slip out the corners of her mouth. Bone could not walk or stand, so she spent her days in a wheelchair. Dagmar lifted her easily even though Bone was bigger than her. She carried her up and down the steps with her back straight. I could see Bone’s thin ankles dangling as they went up the steps. Soon, Bone’s moans and slurs sounded like talking to me, and I could understand her too. I stopped thinking of her as anything but another girl. I asked Dagmar why Bone was like she was.

'I was young, stupid, and wearing too tight clothes,' she said."
