Minerva Rising Press 2020 fiction contest winner is Nancy Johnson with her novella Awake. Kathryn Trueblood, author of Take Daily as Needed and The Baby Lottery, judged the finalists and selected Johnson’s Awake. Trueblood states, “Awake is explicitly critical of how medicated and managed our elderly living in group facilities are and includes organized resistance and a touch of romance. I admired its pluck and its spirited, relevant fiction.”

Awake provides a glimpse into life at a nursing home where resident Frances, the retired microbiologist, takes a bold stand. She doesn’t know it then, but when she dares to defy her doctor’s wishes and ditches offending medication, she sets off a whole new kind of revolution. Awake is a sometimes poignant, often irreverent story about retired rockers kicking bad drugs, and in so doing, they find life, not just existence, in long-term care.
